Volunteers and interns play an important role at the Big Apple Gazette by assisting with journalism, media production, community outreach, and behind-the-scenes operations while gaining hands-on experience in storytelling and public media. This effort is also part of the Gazette’s partnership with Devil Dog USA and its youth mentorship initiatives.
Many volunteers and interns assist with research and reporting preparation. This includes gathering background information, organizing interview notes, reviewing public records, and preparing materials for upcoming articles and feature stories. These responsibilities help participants better understand how stories are developed before publication.
Others focus on photography and visual media. Volunteers and interns may assist with event photography, photo selection, social media visuals, and video-related content tied to interviews, public events, and community coverage throughout New York City.
The Big Apple Gazette also provides opportunities within media production. Volunteers and interns may help with podcast preparation, television production support, equipment setup, editing assistance, and other technical responsibilities connected to the Gazette’s growing media department and affiliated programs.
Community engagement is another important area. Some volunteers and interns assist with outreach efforts, event coordination, and connecting local residents, organizations, and public figures with the newspaper’s coverage and ongoing projects.
In addition to journalism experience, volunteers and interns gain exposure to communication, teamwork, deadline management, and professional media environments. The Gazette’s mentorship-focused approach is designed to help individuals build confidence while developing practical skills that may assist them in future careers involving journalism, media, public service, or communications.
A key goal for the Big Apple Gazette is also to bring in the perspective of young people. We want youth participants to share their stories, ideas, and points of view while learning how to develop them through professional media resources, reporting guidance, and mentorship opportunities.
As the Big Apple Gazette continues to grow, volunteers and interns remain an important part of the organization’s commitment to mentorship, community-based reporting, and creating opportunities for people interested in media and storytelling.
