In this episode of Vet Talk, host Sergeant Gonzalo Duran sits down with Andrew Einstein of Team Foster for a powerful and deeply personal conversation centered on service, survival, transition, and the life changing impact of service dogs in the veteran community. Joining them in the studio is Cassidy, Einstein’s service dog, whose quiet presence reflects the very purpose of the work being discussed.
Andrew Einstein begins by sharing his journey. Raised in New Jersey with a strong desire to help others, he made the decision at the end of high school to enlist in the Marine Corps, a choice that would define the next chapter of his life. What followed was more than two decades of service, balancing both military duty in the Marine Corps Reserve and a demanding career in law enforcement.
As the conversation develops, Andrew Einstein speaks openly about the reality of returning home. While his transition after Iraq came with challenges, it was his deployment to Afghanistan that marked a turning point. After shifting roles and sustaining a serious injury, he returned home facing both physical and invisible wounds. He describes the difficulty many veterans experience when confronting trauma, and the internal struggle that often prevents them from seeking help.
Andrew Einstein shares one of the most difficult moments of his life with honesty and clarity. After returning home, he suppressed his struggles and attempted to manage them alone. Over time, that path led him to a breaking point where he had planned to take his own life. What changed that outcome was the arrival of his first service dog. That moment did not erase the pain, but it introduced responsibility, purpose, and a reason to keep moving forward. From there, he began seeking treatment, accepting his condition, and rebuilding his life step by step.

Sergeant Gonzalo Duran connects this experience to a broader message, reminding viewers that help is always available through the 988 Crisis Hotline, with veterans able to press 1 for immediate support.
The discussion then turns to Team Foster, the organization that now plays a central role in Andrew Einstein’s life. What began as a connection through a disabled veteran hockey team evolved into a new mission. Today, Andrew Einstein not only benefits from the program but also works within it, helping pair other veterans with service dogs.
He explains that the strength of Team Foster lies in both its standards and its community. Service dogs are highly trained over a period of nearly two years and carefully matched to each veteran’s needs. Cassidy, for example, assists Andrew Einstein with hearing support, migraine alerts, and PTSD related care. These dogs are not simply companions. They are trained partners that provide structure, stability, and independence.
Beyond the training, Andrew Einstein emphasizes the importance of community. Team Foster brings together veterans, families, and supporters through events, outreach, and shared experiences that create lasting connections. It is not just about pairing a dog. It is about building a support system that extends far beyond the initial placement.
The conversation also addresses transition. After sustaining a career ending injury in law enforcement, Andrew Einstein is now preparing to enter civilian life for the first time in over twenty years. He speaks candidly about the emotional weight of stepping away from a life in uniform, while also recognizing the importance of redefining identity beyond those roles.
This episode of Vet Talk stands as a reflection of what the show represents. It is not simply an interview. It is a platform for truth, resilience, and community. The story shared by Andrew Einstein is one of survival, growth, and renewed purpose, offering insight and hope to those who may be facing similar challenges.
