On a bitterly cold Sunday night, February 1, the Bronx gathered indoors for the second-term inauguration of Vanessa L. Gibson. Held at Lehman College’s Performing Arts Center on the first day of Black History Month, the ceremony signaled from the outset that the evening would balance reflection on legacy with a focus on direction.
Before any formal proceedings, the event opened with a cultural presentation by Bombazo Dance Company, a Bronx-based nonprofit dedicated to Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba traditions. The performance transformed the stage into a dialogue between drum and dancer, grounding the evening in ancestry, movement, and continuity, and underscoring the borough’s cultural foundations.

The program then turned formal under the guidance of Mistress of Ceremonies Debralee Santos, Editor in Chief of the Manhattan Times and Bronx Free Press. Her opening remarks set a steady tone for a ceremony that blended celebration with resolve.
Faith leaders representing Muslim, Jewish, and Christian traditions followed with invocations centered on courage, moral clarity, and stewardship. Their remarks emphasized unity and responsibility, reflecting the diversity of the borough and a shared message of leadership rooted in service.
Remarks from local, state, and federal officials echoed those themes. Speakers highlighted Gibson’s accessibility, consistency, and hands-on leadership style, framing her approach as one defined by presence across the borough. The theme of unity across race, faith, and class recurred throughout the evening, reinforcing the Bronx’s identity as a working-class, immigrant-powered borough.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer traced Gibson’s rise from intern to Borough President, describing her leadership as earned through public service. Congressman Ritchie Torres drew laughter and applause when he described Gibson as one of two people who are everywhere in the Bronx, underscoring her visibility and responsiveness.
New York State Attorney General Letitia James, who administered the oath of office, focused her remarks on trust, accountability, and protection of working families. Several speakers also offered critiques of the Trump administration on issues including immigration enforcement and civil liberties, reflecting the political landscape of New York and the Bronx.

As Vanessa L. Gibson took the oath, she was joined on stage by family, staff, and community leaders, reinforcing the communal nature of governance in the borough. In her inaugural address, Gibson outlined priorities including education and workforce development, cultural institutions and tourism, public health equity, affordable housing, and community-driven economic development.
She closed with the phrase that framed the evening, “The Bronx Leads,” marking the formal start of her second term and setting the tone for the next chapter in Bronx leadership.
