Meet the Candidate: Veronica Gonzalez for NY State Assembly 74

Veronica Gonzalez says frustration within her community pushed her toward seeking public office in New York State’s 74th Assembly District.

Born and raised on the Lower East Side, Gonzalez says years of watching residents struggle with crime, rising rent costs, and limited youth opportunities motivated her to transition from community activism into politics.

“I think we need resolutions instead of promises,” Gonzalez said. “People are tired of hearing the same things from elected officials and not seeing results.”

The 74th Assembly District includes portions of the Lower East Side, Kips Bay, Gramercy Park, and surrounding Manhattan neighborhoods. Like many districts throughout New York City, the area continues facing concerns involving affordability, public safety, quality-of-life issues, and access to community resources.

A graduate of Monroe College, Gonzalez has spent years involved in community outreach, advocacy work, and local media initiatives.

In addition to her political campaign, Gonzalez is an author, musician, and host of the Vero G Spotlight radio show. She also publishes a monthly magazine and has participated in advocacy efforts connected to domestic violence awareness, youth programs, and neighborhood initiatives.

Raised in the Lower East Side, Gonzalez says her experiences growing up in the community continue shaping both her political views and campaign priorities.

Over the years, Gonzalez has worked alongside community organizations, elected officials, and advocacy groups focused on neighborhood issues throughout Manhattan.

She says previous campaign involvement and community outreach efforts helped prepare her for the realities of running for office, including petitioning, fundraising, and direct voter engagement.

Veronica Gonzalez is a registered member of the Conservative Party of New York State and is expected to appear on both the Conservative Party and Republican Party ballot lines in the upcoming election.

“In the last year, I’ve been speaking to people door to door and listening to their problems,” Gonzalez said. “Now I want to take action on those issues.”

Gonzalez added that learning the behind-the-scenes aspects of campaigns gave her a deeper understanding of the political process and the responsibilities that come with public office.

One of the biggest motivations behind her campaign, she says, is the belief that many residents throughout the district feel ignored by elected officials.

She specifically pointed to concerns raised by residents living in and around the Jacob Riis Houses and surrounding communities who she believes feel disconnected from city leadership.

“We’re tired of the same runaround,” Gonzalez said. “People feel like their voices are unheard.”

Public safety remains one of Gonzalez’s top campaign priorities. She says many residents throughout the district increasingly feel concerned about crime levels and a lack of visible police presence within neighborhoods.

Gonzalez supports increased police visibility, additional funding for law enforcement resources, and expanded use of modern surveillance technology aimed at improving crime prevention and response times.

“We need more visibility and awareness in the community,” Gonzalez said. “As long as there’s a stronger presence, people feel safer.”

She also pointed to concerns involving neighborhood businesses and quality-of-life issues affecting residents throughout the district.

Affordable housing is another major focus of Gonzalez’s campaign. She says rising rent prices continue pushing working-class residents out of neighborhoods many families have lived in for generations.

Among her proposals is support for mixed-income housing models aimed at preventing economic segregation within developments.

“You want mixed facilities instead of separating everybody,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez also believes the city should explore converting vacant lots and empty storefronts into additional housing opportunities, including studio apartments and smaller residential units designed to help address the city’s housing shortage.

She additionally expressed interest in exploring affordability measures tied more closely to residents’ income levels in an effort to help prevent displacement caused by rapidly rising rents.

Youth programs and community investment also remain central parts of Gonzalez’s platform. She says one of the district’s biggest long-term issues is the lack of opportunities available to young people.

She specifically referenced reductions in after-school activities, summer programs, and community-based youth organizations that previously operated throughout the Lower East Side.

“There’s a lot of limited resources for children,” Gonzalez said. “We need programs that keep kids busy and off the streets.”

Her proposals include expanding after-school programming, sports activities, trade-school exposure, workforce development initiatives, and mentorship opportunities focused on at-risk youth.

She says providing structured activities during evenings and weekends could help reduce crime while creating stronger long-term opportunities for local teenagers.

Whether Veronica Gonzalez ultimately succeeds in her campaign remains to be seen, but her candidacy reflects frustrations increasingly heard throughout neighborhoods struggling with affordability, crime concerns, and growing distrust in political leadership.

For Gonzalez, the campaign represents what she describes as ordinary residents stepping forward after years of feeling unheard.

“It’s time for regular people to take initiative,” she said.
