On February 6, 2025, Hostos Community College hosted Ideas for Creating a Stronger and More Equitable Bronx, an event organized by the Center for an Urban Future and sponsored by Verizon. The event brought together Bronx leaders, business owners, nonprofit organizations, and entrepreneurs with a shared mission: to develop and implement solutions that foster economic growth, improve education, and advance social equity in the borough.
The evening opened with Jonathan Bowles, Executive Director of the Center for an Urban Future, delivering a keynote address highlighting the organization’s commitment to expanding programs that address the Bronx’s most pressing challenges. He emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships and grassroots innovation in driving sustainable progress. His remarks set the stage for a fireside chat with Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, who reflected on her achievements, discussed her ongoing initiatives, and emphasized the need for collaboration between government officials and local organizations to create meaningful change.

A central focus of the event was the idea pitches, where at least ten individuals and organizations presented their bold visions for strengthening the Bronx. Among the speakers were Rocky Bucano (Founder & Executive Director, Hip Hop Museum), Debbie Roman (New York Managing Director, Per Scholas), and Yasmin Cruz (Executive Director, Westchester Square Business Improvement District). Their proposals ranged from youth education initiatives and workforce development programs to community-driven business support and elder care solutions, each aimed at improving the quality of life for Bronx residents.
The event also featured two engaging panel discussions. The first panel brought together leaders from local organizations, who shared insights on their programs and the impact they have had on the Bronx community. The second panel consisted of elected officials, who discussed their policies, upcoming initiatives, and strategies to ensure continued investment in the borough.

The night concluded with an open-floor audience pitch session, where attendees had the opportunity to present their own ideas directly to decision-makers, activists, and community leaders. This interactive portion of the event encouraged networking, idea-sharing, and the formation of potential partnerships. Many community members seized this opportunity to showcase their work and advocate for initiatives aimed at creating a more inclusive, sustainable future.
As the event came to a close, one message resonated clearly—the Bronx is filled with passionate leaders, innovative ideas, and a collective determination to build a more equitable Bronx where every resident has access to opportunity, resources, and support.
