According to the Social Security Administration, the webinar will provide practical guidance on how to recognize, avoid, and report scams targeting older Americans. Officials will also discuss ways individuals can safely and securely access Social Security’s online services.
The agency noted that scammers often target seniors through fraudulent phone calls, emails, text messages, and fake government impersonation schemes designed to steal personal information or benefits.
As part of the presentation, officials are also encouraging Americans age 18 and older to create a personal “my Social Security” account. Establishing an account can help protect personal information, reduce unauthorized access, and lower the risk of fraudulent claims filed by identity thieves.
The Social Security Administration continues to provide services online, by phone, and in person to better meet the needs of older adults and individuals with disabilities.
Community organizations, caregivers, and family members are encouraged to share this information with seniors who may benefit from the webinar and fraud prevention resources.
The announcement comes as part of Older Americans Month, recognized each May as a time to honor the contributions older adults make to communities across the country while promoting programs and services that support their health, independence, and well-being.
