The Big Apple Gazette’s Veteran of the Month initiative is designed to recognize and highlight veterans across New York City who continue to make an impact in their communities after their military service.
Each month, one veteran will be selected from each borough, ensuring representation from the Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. This structure allows the program to provide consistent, borough-based recognition while building a broader record of veteran contributions across the city.
Candidates for Veteran of the Month may be identified in two ways. Individuals can be recommended by members of the community, including peers, organizations, and local leaders, or they may submit themselves for consideration. This approach keeps the process open and accessible while allowing for a range of backgrounds and experiences to be considered.
The purpose of this initiative extends beyond recognizing military service alone. It focuses on what comes after. Many veterans transition into roles as business owners, community leaders, and advocates, continuing their service in different forms. This series is intended to document and highlight those efforts in a structured and ongoing format.
Each selected veteran will be featured in a written profile published by the Big Apple Gazette, accompanied by photography when available. In addition, honorees will have the opportunity to appear on Vet Talk, a veteran-focused talk show that provides a platform for more in-depth discussion about their service, experiences, and current work.
The Veteran of the Month program is part of a broader effort to provide visibility, recognition, and a platform for those who have served and continue to contribute beyond the uniform, across all boroughs each month, and throughout the year, without exception, citywide and consistently recognized.
