Empty Pews or Empty Faith: What Do We See in the Silence?

Empty pews. Or Empty faith.
A silence that echoes louder than the choir ever did.

There was a time when the church was more than walls and windows—
it was the heart of the neighborhood,
the soul of the people,
the place where burdens were laid down and hope was lifted up.
A place to mourn, to heal, to rejoice, to pray.

Now too often, that sanctuary is traded for politics, appearances, and rejection.
The very seats that once overflowed with voices of praise now stand as monuments of absence—dust gathering where faith once danced.

Why? What happened?

We sing of glory, we preach of grace,
yet when life shatters us—where do we run?
We pretend we see the storm coming, and still ignore it.
We shrug off pain as “part of the plan.”
But in the midnight hour, when tears will not stop,
we still cry out for God.
We long for miracles, for answers.
But do we still believe they are coming?
Or has doubt drowned out our faith?

Perhaps it isn’t only our belief in God that falters.
Perhaps it is our belief in people.
The man in the pulpit.
The preacher meant to guide and not mislead.
Too often, when trust in leaders is broken, faith in the institution cracks.
And the sins of a few cast shadows over the sanctuary of many.

But I ask you—
are we letting people dictate our beliefs?
Are we worshipping buildings more than the Spirit that is meant to live within us?

Your God is still your God.
Your faith is still your truth.
And faith was never meant to be hidden.
It was meant to be lived—
in the open, in community,
with brothers and sisters who see you, support you, and walk beside you.

Because empty pews do not mean empty faith.
Maybe the silence is not death—
maybe it is invitation.
An invitation to return.
To return different.
To return real.
