James Washington Ward, a passionate advocate for the Bronx, is running for New York City Council in District 12 and is seeking the Conservative Party line. Currently serving as the Conservative Party District Leader for the 83rd Assembly District—which encompasses the neighborhoods of Williamsbridge, Wakefield, Edenwald, Eastchester, and Baychester. With a strong connection to his community and a vision for change, Ward aims to bring new energy to the council and address the pressing issues faced by his constituents.
Ward’s story begins in the Bronx, where he was born and raised. A proud Black American, Ward briefly lived in Pennsylvania but felt the pull to return to his roots. He now resides in the Baychester neighborhood. His childhood was shaped by experiences in the Star of the Sea Sea Cadet Corps, a military youth organization in the Bronx, and his education at Samuel Gompers Vocational Technical High School. These formative years gave him a deep appreciation for his community and a desire to see it thrive.
“My neighborhood is relatively quiet,” Ward shared, “but not without its challenges. A few blocks over, the environment changes—it becomes louder and less safe. The area isn’t well-funded, and there are limited activities or programs for kids. It’s clear to me that our community deserves better.”
Ward’s decision to run for City Council stems from his frustration with the lack of representation for his neighborhood. He believes that too many backroom deals and underhanded practices have left residents voiceless.
“We need someone from our community to step up,” Ward explained. “Decisions are being made without our input. It’s time to have someone in the room who genuinely represents the people and won’t back down. That’s why I’m running—to ensure the voices of District 12 are heard loud and clear.”
Despite this being his first campaign, Ward is optimistic. His primary goal is to win, but he also views his candidacy as a platform to inspire hope and awareness. “I want people to know there are individuals in their community who care deeply and are ready to fight for meaningful change. Whether you’re young, elderly, middle-class, or working-class, this campaign is about making life better for everyone in our community,” he said.
Ward’s campaign focuses on three key issues:
Bridging the Gap Between Civilians and the NYPD
Ward sees the need for improved communication and trust between law enforcement and the community. He wants to foster better relationships and create an environment where everyone feels safe and respected.
Expanding Youth and Community Programs
Ward emphasizes the importance of creating opportunities for young people. “Kids need something to do—programs, activities, resources. We need to invest in their future,” he stated.
Cleaning and Beautifying the Neighborhood
A clean and welcoming environment is vital to Ward’s vision. He plans to advocate for more sanitation resources and community clean-up initiatives, ensuring the Bronx remains a place residents can take pride in.
Ward also recognizes the threat of gentrification and aims to address it by preserving the community’s character and ensuring long-time residents aren’t pushed out.
Beyond his campaign platforms, Ward wants voters to know they can expect transparency, hard work, and honesty from him. “If I’m wrong, I’ll admit it. I’m committed to doing what’s right for our community and finding solutions that work for everyone,” he said.
While Ward’s campaign website is still under development, he remains accessible to the people. Constituents can reach him via Instagram at @James_WWard, where he responds to messages within a day. Additionally, he welcomes in-person conversations while campaigning in the neighborhood. “Stop me in the street and let’s talk,” he urged. “The only way to bring about change is to start listening to each other.”
Ward’s candidacy represents a bold step forward for City Council District 12. With his commitment to community, transparency, and tangible change, he hopes to inspire a brighter future for the Bronx.
