The heart of Harlem has a new Mexican grocery store, which celebrated its grand opening with much excitement on Cinco de Mayo (May 5th). Community members, local officials, business owners, family, and friends gathered to welcome this exciting new addition to the neighborhood.
Located at 2085 Lexington Avenue in Manhattan between 125th Street and Lexington Avenue, the store brings a new diverse atmosphere with its authentic Mexican products to Harlem’s active community. From fresh produce and a variety of meats to traditional spices, unique snacks, and household goods, the grocery store aims to serve both the local Mexican community and all residents interested in exploring Mexican cuisine or simply in need of groceries. Currently, they offer light meals during the weekend and will shortly be adding food regularly throughout the day.
The grand opening featured lively music, traditional Mexican dance performances, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. “This store will bring diversity to the neighborhood, and hopefully grow because of all the wonder it brings and the uniqueness for this area,” said a local community member who wanted to buy something to wish the new owners well.
Hoyos expressed her gratitude to the community for their warm welcome and to all the friends and family members who came from great distances and took time from their busy schedules to attend. “We are thrilled to open our doors today in Harlem and share the flavors of Mexico with our new neighbors. I never thought I would be opening a store in Manhattan, let alone Harlem,” Hoyos said.
This store marks Hoyos’ second, and she hopes to open a third in the near future. She expressed that it has been a lot of work going to school, being a mom, and a businesswoman. “To all the women and people that think they can’t do it, trust me, it can be done!”
