Celebrating Puerto Rican Heritage: Spotlight on Local Artist Cindy “Amor” Bobé

The National Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City will take place Sunday, June 9, on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan around 11 AM.

In anticipation of this event, we decided to highlight a local artist who embodies the Puerto Rican spirit. Cindy Bobé, also known as Amor, is an artist who has integrated Puerto Rico into her everyday life, from her car to her clothing and, of course, her art.

Here are a few questions we asked Bobe to learn more about her and her artwork.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in the art world?

I was born in Vineland, New Jersey, but was raised in Guaraguao, Guaynabo in Puerto Rico. I am Puerto Rican through my parents, who were both born on our beautiful island. I used to draw from a young age but had stopped for many years due to life’s challenges. After being reborn in Christ, the Lord reminded me that I was an artist and reignited my passion for art. He inspires the visions that I bring to life. Art also serves as my natural therapy, helping me cope with life and maintain my mental health. It truly is a great form of therapy.

What inspired you to focus on Puerto Rican themes in your artwork?

I am a proud Boricua, and I love to show it. I adore my beautiful island and our beautiful flag. My art reminds me of my true home, Puerto Rico.

How do you incorporate elements of Puerto Rican culture and heritage into your pieces?

My main focus is our Puerto Rican flag, which represents our heritage and culture. I strive to capture the spirit of our people and their love for the island.

What message or emotions do you hope to convey through your art?

Through my Puerto Rican art, I aim to spread love and showcase my admiration for our amazing, beautiful, and magical island. I hope my work brings hope to our island, which is being torn apart by greed. I want people to pray and not lose faith in Puerto Rico. We will emerge from this stronger than ever. Puerto Rico is not for sale.

Can you describe your creative process from concept to finished piece?

I pray before each painting, and the Holy Spirit guides the vision for each piece. My artwork is spiritual and healing, bringing peace and joy to the soul.

Which artist or artistic movements have influenced your work the most?

The Lord is my biggest influencer and the greatest artist. He guides my every move. My work embodies messages of love, faith, healing, peace, growth, and strength.

How has your work been received by the local community and beyond?

I have reached out to some art places and restaurants, but nothing has materialized yet. I don’t lose hope, though. I trust in the Lord and his timing, and I will continue to push forward.

Do you have a favorite piece or collection that holds special meaning to you?

Each piece is made with love and dedication. I cherish them all, as each one brings me peace of mind and joy. However, there is one piece that I am not selling, so I guess that’s my favorite.

How do you see your artwork evolving in the future?

The future is in God’s hands, so I can’t predict it. However, I am a ball of positivity and pray that Amor’s artwork will one day be known around the world, like the Mona Lisa.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists who want to explore their cultural heritage through art?

I would tell them to follow their hearts and not let anyone’s opinions stop them from achieving success. Sharing their culture through art is essential to keeping it alive.

If someone wants to purchase your work, how do they go about doing it?

They can send me a message on Instagram at: Speakloveee

Any last words you want the people to know?

I would like to mention that the proceeds from my artwork go towards continuing my mission to help the needy. All glory to God!

We hope you will reach out to Cindy and support local artists. If you are an artist who would like to be highlighted, please feel free to reach out.
