This holiday season, Bronx Special Kids is creating a space where every child can experience the joy of Christmas. On December 14th, the organization will host a sensory-friendly Christmas event at the Parkchester Library. Designed specifically for children with disabilities, the event is a collaborative effort supported by Citizen NYC, local schools, and community contributions. It exemplifies the power of unity and grassroots action.
Building a Community of Acceptance
Bronx Special Kids, a parent-led organization, focuses on creating “third places“—safe spaces where children with disabilities can connect, learn, and thrive. The group’s mission extends beyond raising awareness, aiming to foster environments of acceptance and celebration.
“Our mission is to ensure children with disabilities and their families feel welcomed and supported,” said the organization’s organizer, Gisselle Ramirez. “This event is about more than just the holidays—it’s about building a community.”
What Makes This Event Special
The sensory-friendly Christmas event is designed with inclusivity at its core, addressing the unique needs of children with sensory sensitivities, particularly those with autism.
Key Features:
- Low-Stimulation Environment: Minimal decorations and dimmed lighting create a calming atmosphere.
- Tailored Activities: Crafts will be available for various motor skill levels, ensuring all children can engage.
- Experienced Staffing: The event will be staffed by teachers, advocates, and parents experienced in supporting children with disabilities.
- Sensory Toys: Children can enjoy interactive toys like fidget spinners, slime, and puzzles.
- Thoughtful Snacks: Food options such as applesauce, goldfish crackers, and juice boxes cater to sensory sensitivities.
A Visit from Santa Claus
Santa Claus will make a special appearance, ensuring that every child feels included. Unlike traditional events where some children may feel overlooked, this celebration prioritizes individual interactions.
“Every child will have the chance to meet Santa in a way that feels safe and comfortable for them,” Ramirez added.
Addressing Practical Needs
Beyond holiday festivities, Bronx Special Kids aims to provide essential resources to families. With donations from Citizen NYC and local schools, the organization will distribute winter clothing, including hoodies and coats, to children in need. This initiative reflects their dedication to meeting both emotional and practical needs.
Future Initiatives
The Christmas event is just one part of Bronx Special Kids’ broader mission. The organization runs several programs, including a six-month initiative teaching children gardening, art, and entrepreneurship. In January, they will launch a project where children will grow and sell products at farmers markets.
“We’re focused on empowering children with disabilities to engage in their communities and build independence,” said Ramirez. “Our gardens are spaces for growth—both literally and figuratively.”
How You Can Help
Bronx Special Kids invites the community to support their mission by donating:
- Sensory Toys: STEM toys, slime, and other hands-on items.
- Winter Clothing: Hoodies, hats, gloves, and coats.
- Snacks: Easy-to-eat items like juice boxes, crackers, and applesauce.
Leftover donations will be shared with other organizations supporting children with disabilities across the city.
Join the Celebration
While the event is open to the public, space is limited, and registration is required. Families can also join Bronx Special Kids’ growing Facebook group, which already includes over 500 members, to stay updated on future events.
