LGBTQ Advocate Harassed for Months, Blames Police for Delayed Justice

In the early hours of December 18th, Michael Gonzalez, a passionate community advocate and minister, was brutally attacked as he attempted to return home. This attack, unfortunately, is just one in a series of assaults that have been occurring over the past several months. What makes the situation even more troubling is that officers from the New York Police Department’s 49th Precinct have done little to intervene or offer protection, despite Gonzalez’s repeated pleas for help.

Gonzalez, who is a vocal advocate for the LGBTQ community, believes he is being targeted specifically because of his sexual orientation. He has endured harassment both at his apartment complex and on the streets by individuals living in his building. In New York City, such targeted harassment qualifies as a hate crime, yet Gonzalez’s calls for justice have gone unanswered.

Despite having clear video evidence of the attacks, Gonzalez claims that the 49th Precinct has failed to press charges against his assailants. Worse yet, he alleges that police officers have neglected to file proper reports in previous instances, leaving him without essential documentation. This has complicated his efforts to relocate, as city agencies require a police report to expedite housing assistance. Without the necessary paperwork, Gonzalez’s situation has become even more dire, as he struggles to escape the hostile environment he’s been forced to endure.

Speaking with a case worker from a city agency, Gonzalez shared how the lack of a police report is holding up his relocation process. The case worker explained that without formal documentation, it is nearly impossible to expedite the transfer to safer housing. However, thanks to the numerous videos capturing the attacks, along with a letter of support from the nonprofit, Devil Dog USA Incorporated, Gonzalez’s case is finally receiving the attention it deserves.

In his search for justice, Gonzalez has also reached out to his local councilwoman, Kristy Marmorato, as well as other politicians and organizations. All have expressed concern over the situation and agree that this kind of hate-driven harassment towards the LGBTQ community has no place in the city.

Despite the ongoing challenges, Gonzalez remains hopeful that his case will soon see resolution. He has called on anyone willing to help or provide support to reach out, as he continues to fight for his safety and dignity.

The following video, taken earlier this morning, shows Gonzalez being attacked as he attempted to enter his building. The footage serves as a chilling reminder of the harassment he faces daily and underscores the urgent need for intervention.
