The Nightmare Before Christmas Light Trail is Back at the NYBG

The New York Botanical Garden has once again transformed as Disney and Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas Light Trail officially reopened to the public today. The beloved fall tradition—now in its second year—returns bigger, brighter, and more enchanting than ever before, running on select evenings from September 25 through November 30, 2025.

The preview night on September 24 offered an early glimpse into this eerie wonderland. Jeffrey Seller, founder of Adventurelive and creator of the experience, welcomed guests with a promise of something far beyond a simple repeat. “Nightmare is going to be even better this year,” Seller said. “More sculptures, more lights, beer and wine, hot cider—this is one trail you want to walk, hike, or get lost on.”

And he wasn’t exaggerating. This year’s installment features an extended pathway, newly designed character moments, upgraded light sculptures, and mesmerizing video projections that dance across the trees and architecture of the Garden. From glowing pumpkins to spectral snowflakes, every corner of the trail immerses visitors deeper into Tim Burton’s iconic world.

As guests wander through the forested paths of the Garden, they meet familiar faces: Jack Skellington, Sally, and Zero the ghost dog. Each scene blends custom-built figures, theatrical lighting, fog effects, and the film’s unforgettable soundtrack to recreate beloved moments from the 1993 classic.

This year also introduces new refreshment stations and themed merchandise booths. Hot cider warms cold hands, while seasonal treats, wine, and beer add to the festive atmosphere. For many, it’s more than a stroll through a garden—it’s a full-sensory journey through nostalgia.

Visitors shared their reactions:

  • Marisol, said, “I had a really good time. The music and lights were a nice escape from the busy streets. The theme (The Nightmare Before Christmas) took me back to being a kid—loving Halloween while dreaming of Christmas.”
  • Jen, laughed while recounting a moment she overheard: “A kid said he wasn’t scared. It’s not really scary—it’s like a Halloween fantasy come to life in the Boogie Down Bronx.”
  • Liz, visiting for the first time, added, “I liked the show—especially the music. It was spooky in the best way.”

Though similar light trails exist in other states like Texas, each one is uniquely designed to suit its space. Seller chose NYBG specifically, believing it was the ideal setting for bringing this hauntingly beautiful story to life in New York.

As for what’s next? Organizers are staying tight-lipped. “Stay tuned,” they said, hinting that the long-term vision is to bring the light trail to other major U.S. cities—and possibly return to NYBG for a third year.

For now, the gates to Halloween Town are open. The pumpkins are glowing. The music is calling. And for ten magical weeks, New Yorkers can step into a world where the strange, the merry, and the magical collide—only at the New York Botanical Garden.
